my maytag performa PAV2300AWW is making a very loud grinding type noise. almost sounds like something is loose. makes this noise during the wash and rinse cycles. the agitator post is also loose, wiggles back and forth.
any ideas on what the problem is and how to fix it?

It sounds like you have a worn out transmission. If you didn't tell me the agitator was loose I would have told you to check the pump for anything that might be stuck in it. Remove the agitator and check to see if the plastic inside it is worn out.

When you have the agitator off, then check the post that comes up through the tub. If that is loose then the transmission is bad, if that is not loose then replace the agitator.
