my washer starts on its own once I've put my load in and closed the door... without me pushing the Start button... what's wrong with it?

I would have to say that the dial you pull to start the machine is internally broken in the "pulled" position. This is something that you could live with, without replacing the timer.

I've seen a few dryers like this. Just turn the dial to off when your not using it. More common on dryers than washers for sure.

One thing you could check is to make sure that the knob and the dial around the knob are properly installed and haven't become loose.
